Six arrested for electrocution of two adult female Asian elephants in Assam’s Sivasagar

At least six persons involved in causing the electrocution death of two adult female wild Asian elephants, a Schedule I species protected under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 in Digholdorioli area, Sivasagar has been arrested by the Forest team.

A wildlife case has been booked by Sivasagar Range under Sivasagar Territorial Forest Division against all the six accused of violation of the provisions of the section- 9 R/W section-2 (16) & (35) and section-52 and punishable as per the section-51 of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 along with Assam Amendment Act 2009.

The arrested accused caused the death of the two elephants by laying illegal electric fencing around Rabi crops in an illegal cultivation area in Digholdorioli grazing land.

All the six accused persons were apprehended on 26/12/2020 on the day of detection of the Wildlife offence by Forest team from Sivasagar Forest Division and after causing interrogation and investigation the 6 accused persons were arrested on 27/12/2020 at 11.30 am and produced in CJM, Sivasagar and sent to judicial custody.

Material evidence was seized from the field and a preliminary report by Veterinary Officer conducting on spot PM showed signs of electrocution death in both the elephants.

It may be mentioned that the Wildlife (Protection) Assam Amendment Act 2009 provides enhanced punishment as well as penalty and is triable in the Court of Sessions.
