Two ATM booth crooks nabbed in Manipur

Imphal: Manipur Police has arrested two crooks who made an attempt to steal money by vandalizing an SBI ATM booth situated near Bheigo Saw Mill, Andro Parking in Imphal East.

When teams of Imphal East Police rushed at the spot one LPG cylinder and one oxygen cylinder along with cutting torch was found inside the booth. The police team acted swiftly as soon as they received information about damaging the ATM booth by miscreants with the intent to steal money at around 6 am.

Superintendent of police, Imphal East, Jogeshchandra Haobijam informed the media that the apprehended persons were identified as Asem Rojit, 29, son of (L) A. Norendro Singh of Palace Compound and Seram Bikram, 20, son of S. Boson of Pukhao Naharup who is at present residing at Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai.

Rojit was apprehended from Eastern Sporting ground nearby his residence and Bikram was apprehended from his Singjamei residence. It is unfortunate that the person (Rojit) residing at the opposite side of the ATM booth was found to be the main culprit as against the expectation that people nearby ATM booth would care of it, he added.

The crooks were unsuccessful in their attempt to commit the crime. They attempted to steal at around 12:50 am to 1:22 am due to the frequent Police patrolling during the night time. They had run away leaving behind the equipment used to commit the crime, Jogeshchandra told reporters.

It was learned from the general manager, SBI (RBO), who visited the spot, that the ATM machine contained an amount of Rs 16,90,000 and none of the money was stolen from the ATM booth, he added.

A case has been registered at Promompat Police station against the rogues and seized the equipment they used in their mission along with a van bearing registration number AS01A/5662. They will be produced at the court and take up appropriate legal actions, the officer said.
