Railways invites private participation for operation of 151 passenger trains

The project would entail private sector investment of about Rs 30,000 crore

Guwahati: Ministry of Railways has invited Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for private participation for operation of passenger train services over 109 Origin Destination(OD) pairs of routes through introduction of 151 modern Trains (Rakes).

As per a press statement, the 109 OD Pairs have been formed into 12 clusters across the Indian Railway network. Each train shall have a minimum of 16 coaches.

The project would entail private sector investment of about Rs 30,000 crore. This is the first initiative of private investment for running Passenger Trains over Indian Railways network.

The press statement also stated that the private entity shall be responsible for financing, procuring, operation and maintenance of the trains.

Meanwhile, Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi slammed the railways for inviting private players for running Passenger Trains over Indian Railways network.

Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter saying, “रेल ग़रीबों की एकमात्र जीवनरेखा है और सरकार उनसे ये भी छीन रही है। (Rail is the only lifeline of the poor and the government is taking it away from them). जो छीनना है, छीनिये। लेकिन याद रहे- देश की जनता इसका करारा जवाब देगी। (Snatch whatever you want to. But remember - the people of the country will give a befitting reply).”
