A huge consignment of illegal Meghalaya-made IMFL was seized from an LPG cylinder-laden lorry by the police near Churaibari at Assam-Tripura border.
Out of suspicion Mintu Shil, in-charge Churaibari Outpost stopped the lorry, the moment it entered the watch post. During checking, they found a huge number of foreign liquor cases containing Old Monk, Royal Stag, Sterling Reserve etc in the lorry, but no LPG cylinders.
The police team arrested the lorry driver and seized at least 497 cases of foreign liquor from the detained lorry. The estimated market value of the seized items is suspected to be around Rs 10 lakh, informed Mintu Shil.
“No documents have been produced by the lorry driver during the investigation,” said Mintu Shil.
Churaibari police in-charge Shil further informed that during interrogation, lorry driver Ranjit Debnath confessed that the liquor consignment was collected from Byrnihat (Meghalaya) and was supposed to get delivered at Kanchanpur in Tripura.
Meanwhile, Police has registered a case under the Assam Excise Act against the accused.
The driver along with the liquor will be produced before the district court tomorrow, said Mintu Shil, in-charge of Churaibari police.
