Alumni of Assam University meets with road accident, dies on the way to Guwahati

In a tragic incident, alumni of the first batch of Department of Visual Arts at Assam University Silchar identified as Manas Kumar Sinha lost his life owing to lack of Neurological treatment facilities at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).

The 48-year-old artist who was well known for his skills in art and sculpture met with a road accident after a collision between an auto and a truck left him with a grave head injury at Chengkuri road on Thursday. He was a native of Hailakandi district.

He was immediately rushed to SMCH, however, doctors informed that the solitary CT scan machine was lying defunct and referred him for treatment to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.

Despite all efforts of his kin and friends, Manas succumbed to his injuries on the way to Guwahati, sources informed.

Meanwhile, Dr Babul Kumar Bezbaruah, principal of SMCH informed that owing to uninterrupted run, the only CT Scan machine of the hospital frequently catches technical snag. " We have sent a proposal for another machine. We have posts sanctioned for the Department of Neurology which needs to start at the earliest; however, there seem to be no one taking interest in joining the department," the principal said.

It is noteworthy to mention that Manash, who was residing in New Bhakatpur area here with his ailing mother and wife. He was an alumnus of the first batch of the Department of Visual Arts at Assam University Silchar and he had sculpted the statue of former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna late Atal Bihari Vajpayee which was recently installed at Sonai constituency of the district. He was also involved with Saksham NGO and trained the specially-abled persons in the field of sculpture.

Speaking to media, Dr. Nirmal Kanti Roy, faculty at the Department of Visual Arts at the university said, "Manas was my classmate at the department of Visual Arts. Besides being skillful in sculpture, he was a great human being. He had worked with great repute in Mumbai and was also involved in many other vital assignments even with Balaji telefilms. It is painful to lose such a person and a great friend."
