Armed Robbers open fire in Cachar, 16 injured, shifted to SMCH

At least 16 people were injured in a firing incident at Burunga area in Kalain under Cachar District on Wednesday.

A gang of 20 to 25 armed robbers barged into the residence of one former Army jawan identified as Aji Uddin in the midnight hours and looted gold ornaments and cash rupees worth Rs 1 lakh (approx) at the gunpoint.

The unidentified miscreants then opened fire at the people who came to the rescue of the former army jawan.

Aji Uddin including several other local people received bullet injuries in the firing incident and was shifted to Silchar Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

 The condition of former jawan Aji Uddin was reported critical.

On the other hand, taking the opportunity of the darkness, the armed robbers managed to flee from the spot.

The incident sparked a sensation in the entire Cachar District.

Meanwhile, angry locals protested and blocked the National Highway for several hours.
