Assam: Girl Attacked By Spurned Lover Succumbs To Her Injuries

The girl, identified as Nandita Saikia, was undergoing treatment at the Brahmaputra Diagnostic and Hospital in Dibrugarh and was in a critical condition.

Guwahati: A college girl from Dhemaji district in Assam, who sustained grievous injuries in the sensational machete attack, succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday.

The girl, identified as Nandita Saikia, was undergoing treatment at the Brahmaputra Diagnostic and Hospital in Dibrugarh and was in a critical condition.

She was put under ventilator support, where she has been battling for her life.

Earlier on Saturday, Saikia, who hailed from Naba kathbaru village in Dhakuakhana, was attack ed with a machete by one Rintu Sarma in Dhemaji district of Assam.

Reportedly, Nandita was attacked because she rejected the marriage proposal of the accused Rintu Sarma. The accused also attacked the victim’s classmate injuring her severely.

The incident occurred when Nandita along with her classmate Kashmira Dutta and her father Deba Dutta was at Dhemaji bus stand.

The trio were immediately admitted to Dhemaji Civil Hospital for treatment. Later, Nandita was shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, then to Brahmaputra Hospital.

The accused was arrested by the police. However, in a video that is doing rounds in social media, the accused can be seen confessing his crime without any remorse, holding a bloodied machete.

The students of Maridhal College in Dhemaji carried out a protest against the heinous incident and condemned the act. The victim was a BA third-semester student of Maridhal College.
