Mamata Banerjee goes to court, challenges BJP’s Nandigram poll win
In the recent eight-phase election, the TMC logged a resounding victory, winning 213 of the state’s 294 seats while the BJP could bag only 77. However, Adhikari made news by defeating Banerjee by 1958 votes.
Barely a month and a half after the assembly election results were declared on May 2 indicating a landslide victory for the Trinamool Congress, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday moved the Calcutta high court challenging the poll verdict at Nandigram in East Midnapore district in which she was defeated by her protégé-turned-adversary Suvendu Adhikari. The former Bengal minister had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in December last year.
Banerjee alleged in her petition that the votes were not counted properly, said TMC leaders aware of the development. After the poll results were announced on May 2, Banerjee moved the Election Commission, challenging the verdict but the EC refused to order a re-count. Adhikari is now the leader of the opposition in the Bengal legislative assembly.
The case is scheduled to be heard by a single judge bench on Friday. The case will be virtually heard by Justice Kausik Chanda at 11 am tomorrow.
