Section 144 extended for more 48 hours in Agartala

87 injured during teacher-police clash in Tripura

Following a clash between police, central paramilitary forces and 10,323 sacked school teachers in front of chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb’s official residence, the West Tripura District magistrate Shailesh Kumar Yadav yesterday extended Section 144 across Agartala for more 48 hours.

As per media reports, based on the intelligence report the terminated 10,323 teachers may intensify their protest in the coming days.

The teachers had been holding a mass sit-in in front of Agartala City Centre for the last 52 days demanding permanent jobs with direct recruitment.

“We have received information yesterday late night that the Joint movement committee of 10, 323 may resort to violence. From this morning we had announced Section 144 for 24 hours. We ordered them to leave the place. However, few left and we have detained 165 teachers,” district magistrate Shailesh Kumar Yadav said, addressing a press conference this evening.

The district magistrate had also informed that around 9.30am, more than 400 terminated teachers gathered in front of the residence of the chief minister, Biplab Kumar Deb.

“Barricades were also set up, we asked them to leave the place but they didn’t listen to us and broke the barricades and intensified their protest. Police tried to prevent them but they didn’t listen, so we used water cannons, fired tear gas. They became violent and started pelting stones at the police personnel. Many police personnel were injured. The agitating teachers also vandalized four police vehicles. Then we had to resort to mild lathi chargeto disperse them. We also detained more 58 teachers,” the official said.

The official said around 87 persons, including 70 protestors and 17 police personnel, received minor injuries during the clash.

“All of them discharged after preliminary treatment. We are extending Section 144 for further 48 hours. As per the report, they might create chaos in coming days as well,” the DM said.
