A student at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati was allegedly “sexually assaulted” by a peer, the police said on Saturday. One person has been arrested in connection with the March 28 incident which reportedly happened on campus.
The police refused to divulge more information on the nature of the alleged sexual assault.
“We cannot reveal more or the exact nature of the assault at this point as the case is under investigation,” said Kamrup SP Hitesh Roy, confirming that one arrest had been made. He refused to reveal the section under which the arrest was made, again citing the “ongoing investigation”.
The police said that the incident involved a female student and the allegation is on her “contemporary”. They also did not reveal the age of the accused.
According to authorities at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, the student was brought to the emergency section at around 12.50 am on March 29.
“The patient’s pulse and blood pressure were very low,” said this doctor, requesting anonymity. “The attendant who checked her found that she had a history of sexual assault.”
IIT authorities are said to have shifted her to the same day to the college’s in-house facility—allegedly against medical advice. “We got all examinations as per protocol (forensics, gynaecological) done, but around 4.30 am the patient was moved out by the IIT-G authorities against our medical advice.
said the doctor quoted above.
A statement released by IIT-G makes no mention of the student being taken back to the college hospital.
“An unfortunate incident involving a female student was brought to the notice of the institute on 28th March 2021” said the statement, adding that a fact-finding committee was formed following that submitted its report on April 2 at 6 pm.
It says the student was “rushed to the Institute hospital where she was examined and was advised to go to Guwahati Medical College (GMC) for necessary medical examination”.
“The fact-finding committee, constituted on March 29, has submitted its report to the institute on April 2 at 6pm and the institute has filed an FIR. The police have initiated their investigation and the institute is providing full cooperation,” the statement read. IIT officials did not reveal the details of the inquiry report.
“The student was transported to GMC in the Institute ambulance accompanied by her friends. Later the Hostel Warden also joined them at the hospital and has been constantly in touch with the hospital authorities as well as the family of the student,” added the statement.
According to the IIT-G statement, the parents of the student were informed about the incident and the institute is “continuously in touch” with them. “The student and her guardians were informed that they could file an FIR, which they have refused presently as they want institute to take up the case” said the statement.
The police, however, did not confirm if the institute had filed the FIR, or if they had made the arrest on the basis of inputs from GMCH authorities. On Saturday morning, the North Guwahati Police (under which IIT-G falls) seized the bed head ticket of the patient from GMCH for examination.
“The police have initiated their investigation and the institute is providing full cooperation to the investigation,” the IIT-G statement said.
An institute spokesperson claimed the student is now “safe” and is “recovering well”. The spokesperson said that they were awaiting further details from the police and could not make further comments before that.
Police added that woman’s statement was recorded on Saturday, six days after the incident. They added that the accused is a batchmate of the woman but refused to give more details about the students or the nature of the alleged assault.
