Guwahati: A journalist based out of Dhubri was arrested on alleged charges of bribe, days after he reported involvement of a forest official in timber and cattle smuggling.
Rajiv Sharma works with a private satellite channel was arrested based on a complaint lodged by Divisional Forest Officer Biswajit Roy.
After divisional forest officer, Biswajit Roy lodged an FIR alleging that the journalist had demanded Rs. 1 lakh from him for hushing up a news report alleging his involvement in cattle and timber smuggling. Roy alleged that the journo demanded a bribe of 1 lakh to refrain from misreporting him in the smuggling case and 2 lakhs bribe for his friend, another journo. Roy further alleged that the journo tried harming the modesty of his wife at his bungalow.
Journo Rajiv Sharma was arrested (Dhurbi PS Case No 903/20) under section 186/384/385/389/506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Debabrata Saikia alleged that the Government is saving the corrupt officers and rather cracking down on the voices of dissent.
Meanwhile, Guwahati Press Club demanded an inquiry and intervention of the CM into this matter.
