40-year-old Man dies at a Quarantine Centre in Manipur

Imphal: A forty years old man from Nambol Kongkham, who was admitted at Nambol Higher Secondary School Community Quarantine Centre (CQC) after he returned home from Guwahati by air on Monday, passed away in the night.

The man had been in Guwahati for the last seven years.

As per COVID-19 SOP norms he was kept at the quarantine centre. He was under treatment for multiple viral infections starting in September 2013 at Guwahati, his temporary resident.

He also had a multi-organ failure because of his prolonged diseases. As his condition was poor, the district surveillance officer Bishnupur, Dr L.Raichandra Singh and medical officer-in-charge, CHC Nambol, Dr L. Kuber Singh took care of the patient till late at night. Unfortunately, he expired around 11.18 pm, chief medical officer, Bishnupur, Dr L. GojendraSingh said in a press statement released on Tuesday.

"His sample has been taken for COVID-19 test but the report is awaited," the chief medical officer said.

"In the absence of the report, we are working on the assumption of handling a COVID-19 positive body. The body is wrapped and disinfected and has been taken by ambulance from the CQC to the crematorium," he added.

The crematorium shall be disinfected afterwards, he said.

COVID-19 is spread by droplet from cough and sneeze of infected persons. There is very little risk of spread from a dead body. The risk being handling of lungs by the post mortem surgeons, however, small the risk in handling the intact death body, the doctor said.

"In spite of the fact that he is not yet positive, all due care is taken to protect the family members and community because of the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic. If the sample of the departed and his wife who returned with him is positive for COVID-19, all close contacts shall be tested," he added.

In the meantime, they shall be in the CQC.
