Alisha Chinai revisits ‘Kajra Re’ on 16 years of Bunty Aur Babli: ‘It sounded like an angel singing for Aishwarya Rai’

Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Rani Mukerji starrer 2005 hit film Bunty Aur Babli complete 16 years today. Singer Alisha Chinai revisits its iconic item song "Kajra Re" and how Aishwarya Rai's presence enhanced it.

It’s been 16 years since Bunty Aur Babli was released. In case this makes you feel old, banish the feeling for the movie starring Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, and Amitabh Bachchan is still as fresh as the day it was released. And not to forget its iconic song “Kajra Re” featuring Aishwarya Rai with Amitabh and Abhishek.

“Kajra Re” features in the movie when Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji (Bunty and Babli) are on the run as they are expecting their first child together. Bunty bumps into cop Dashrath Singh, played by Amitabh Bachchan, at a bar. Little do they know that the con-artists Big B is looking for, are actually Bunty and Babli.

The real father-son duo indulges in some heart-to-heart conversation over drinks, where Bachchan senior shares his story of heartbreak when Aishwarya Rai walks in as a courtesan and tries to woo not Abhishek, but Amitabh. “Kajra Re” sung by Alisha Chinai, Shankar Mahadevan, and Javed Ali, went on to become one of the biggest hits of Bollywood.

The 8-minute-long song was inspired by a semi-classical genre of singing called ‘kajari’, and amply used sitar to give it a localized tune. Aishwarya, in her special appearance, shook a leg with the two Bachchans, on the unique choreography by Vaibhavi Merchant.

Alisha accepted that its “modern qawwali” style of singing was indeed a challenge for her. But, she lauded the composition of music director Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. “I don’t know how I did it, but I guess the song itself was a really fantastic composition. It pushed me beyond my limits and I’m glad that I could deliver it the way Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy wanted me to,” she added.

Topping it all, according to Alisha, it was Aishwarya’s “angelic” presence that made the song, an iconic item number. “It sounded so angelic. It sounded like an angel singing for Aishwarya. She looked mind-blowing. “Kajra Re” became a trend-setter, a Bollywood anthem,” Alisha concluded.

Abhishek had trademark classy reply for troll who called him 'good for nothing'

Actor Abhishek Bachchan dropped one of his trademark classy replies to a Twitter troll who called him 'good for nothing' recently.

Actor Abhishek Bachchan has responded to a Twitter troll in his trademark fashion. Abhishek is known to respond to detractors on social media, much to the admiration of his fans, since he always keeps it classy.

Over the weekend, one person, in reaction to the trailer for Abhishek's upcoming film The Big Bull, called the actor 'good for nothing'. The person wrote that the 'only reason' they were jealous of him is because he has a 'beautiful wife'.

Abhishek, in his response, wrote, "Ok. Thank you for your opinion. Just curious.. who are you referring to because you’ve tagged a whole load of people? I know Ileana & Niki aren’t married that leaves the rest of us (Ajay, Kookie, Sohum) soooo...P.S- will get back to you about @DisneyplusHSVIP‘s marital status."

Last year, Abhishek responded in similar fashion to a troll who suggested that he gets work only because of his lineage. “Aapko nahi lagta ke aapko filmon mein kaam sirf Amitabh Bachchan ke bete hone ki vajah se milta hai (Don’t you think you get work only because you’re Amitabh Bachchan’s son)?” the person asked Abhishek. The actor replied, “Kaash jo aap keh rahe hote sach hota. Sochiye, kitna kaam milta mujhe. (I wish what you’re saying was true. Imagine how much work I’d get).”

When another person, also named Abhishek, said that Abhishek was given his first film, Refugee, only because he was a ‘nepokid’, the actor responded, “Arey yaar, yeh saare duniya ke Abhishek mere peeche kyu padh gaye hain. Baksh do maharaj, chup chaap apna kaam kar raha hu (Oh my, why have all the Abhisheks of the world started attacking me. Have mercy, I’m just trying to do my job).”

The Big Bull is based on the life of stockbroker Harshad Mehta, who was indicted for financial crimes in the 90s. Harshad was the subject of the universally acclaimed streaming series Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story. Pratik Gandhi played him on the show, although Abhishek's character in The Big Bull is named Hemant Shah.
