Assam elections 2021 third phase live updates | Polling begins for 40 seats

Polling for 40 seats in the final phase of the assembly elections in Assam began at 7 a.m. on Tuesday to decide the fate of 337 candidates, including senior minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, his five cabinet colleagues and state BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass.

A direct contest between nominees of the BJP-led NDA and Congress-headed Grand Alliance is on the cards in 20 constituencies while there is a triangular fight, including friendly contests, in the remaining seats with the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) being considered as the third force.

The newly floated AJP is contesting in 22 seats while there are 126 independents in the fray in the final phase of the election in which the BJP-led coalition is seeking to return to power for the second term in a row.

Polling for 40 seats in the final phase of the assembly elections in Assam began at 7 a.m. on Tuesday to decide the fate of 337 candidates, including senior minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, his five cabinet colleagues and state BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass.

People wearing masks and maintaining social distance were seen queuing outside polling stations even before the voting began in the 40 constituencies spread over 12 districts.

 

In several polling stations, the first voter and senior citizens were greeted with a 'gamosa' (traditional towel) and, in some cases, with saplings.

Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Bihar minister Syed Shahnawaz Hussain will also campaign for the party.

New Delhi [India], March 10 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP chief Jagat Prakash Nadda are among 40 star campaigners of the BJP for Assam Assembly elections.

Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Bihar minister Syed Shahnawaz Hussain will also campaign for the party.

Other campaigners include BJP general secretary B L Santosh, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Manipur CM N Biren Singh and Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu will also be seen campaigning for the BJP.

BJP Vice President and party Assam in-charge Baijayant Panda, election in-charge Narendra Singh Tomar and co- incharge Jitendra Singh are also on the list of BJP's star campaigners for Assam.

Bhojpuri actors Manoj Tiwari and Ravi Kisan will also have the responsibility to campaign for party candidates.

Polling for the 126-member Assam assembly will be held on March 27, April 1 and April 6. The counting of votes will take place on May 2.

BJP has announced the first list of 71 candidates for Phase-I and Phase-II Assam Assembly Elections 2021. Of the 71 candidates, the party has given tickets to 11 new candidates. It has also fielded candidates on seats that were earlier held by its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and former partner Bodoland Peoples' Front (BDF).

In 2016, the BJP scripted history and formed the government for the first time in the state ending Congress's 15-year rule. BJP and its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF) won a combined 86 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly. BJP bagged 60 seats, AGP 14 and BPF 12 seats.This time the BPF has joined the Congress-led coalition 'Mahajath' after breaking away from the BJP-led alliance.

Excise Department notifies help line numbers ahead ensuing Assam Assembly Polls

In view of ensuing Assam Assembly Polls, the Department of Excise hereby notified the following helpline numbers for receipt of intelligence input about illegal production/storage/sale of liquor and to receive the grievances and information of violation of rule and distribution of liquor among voters to influence voting.

The officials who shall handle the helpline numbers are namely: Sri Sushanta Debnath, Assistant Inspector of Excise, EIB, Guwahati and Debasish Dey, Assistant Inspector of Excise, EIB, Guwahati.

As per the notification, both the officials shall register every information and complaint received from general public or group, and will accordingly pass on information to the concerned Superintendent of Excise to take action accordingly. If the information is discreet in nature then it must be immediately forwarded on to the joint commissioner of Excise (EIB), Assam for necessary action.

The order shall come into force from January 29, 2021.
