15 suspicious persons allegedly offer Namaz at Mosque in Guwahati
Sensation gripped Guwahati City after 15 suspicious persons allegedly offered Namaz at a mosque in the Beltola area on Sunday evening.
Locals from the area apprehended nine of the group and handed them over to Basistha police, they were later released on bail in the morning hours on Monday. A case was registered in this regard by the city police.
“It’s a highly sensitive matter, but city police have let them go on bail. We are very upset with the city police’s role,” an official of the mosque committee told TIME8.
The members of the committee also claimed that locals in the mosque had found that the 15 persons were offering Namaz in different ways (not in the usual religious way) triggering suspicion. Though they immediately questioned the group and enquired about their identities, six out of them fled the spot, the report stated further.
“The people who entered the mosque claimed that they have converted to Islam about a month back. But we don’t believe their claims and suspect that it was an attempt to create disturbance in the society,” TIME8 quoted the mosque committee members.
Meanwhile, Guwahati Police Joint Commissioner Debraj Upadhyay told the media, “The incident is under investigation. How did they enter the mosque will be verified. The issue has been discussed with the mosque committee as well as the Muslim Students’ Body so as not to create any kind of unpleasant atmosphere in the society. Moreover, they were booked under sections which are bailable, and the case was registered based on an FIR, hence, they were released.”
Notably, the identities of the persons have been kept hidden due to security reasons.
Further investigation is underway.
